According to Ontario’s Health Minster, there are at least 500 doctors who billed the province’s health insurance plan for over $1 million dollars in 2015.
In fact, there was one ophthalmologist who billed for over a whopping $6.6 million.
Health Minister Eric Hoskins states that less than 2% percent of the doctors in Ontario are among the top billers and 10% of the doctors can account for $677 million.
At least $11 billion is spent on physician compensation in Ontario annually. However, they are currently disputing with the Ontario Medical Association over an imposed series of cuts from last year.
Hoskins says an independent third party negotiated with the province and the Ontario Medical Association, but talks fell through back in January 2015.
