Chicago Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw has been suspended for one game, fined $5,000 and must attend sensitivity training after he used homophobic slurs during a game Tuesday night.
Near the end of Game 4 against the St. Louis Blues, Shaw hurled the slur at referees after he was called for a penalty, which ended up costing the Blackhawks the game.
Shaw told reporters at O’Hare Airport that “I’ll never use that word again. It’s a hurtful word.”
Colleague Jonathan Toews called the incident a “teachable moment.”
