The coroner’s office has confirmed that remains found behind a butcher’s shop in Riverdale on Tuesday are human and belong to an adult female.
The news comes following an autopsy conducted on the partial torso on Wednesday afternoon.
However, according to police they are unable to confirm or determine anything else at this time and much further testing is still required.
The gruesome discovery was made on Tuesday morning behind Charlie’s Meat and Seafood on Broadview Avenue, near Gerrard Street East.
Speaking to reporters earlier on Wednesday, Det-Sgt. Terry Browne said the remains found in an industrial black garbage had probably only been at the scene for a number of hours before they were discovered, saying that the body part did not show significant signs of decomposition.
He also warned residents in the area that he would not be surprised if more body parts were located close to where this initial discovery was made.
Browne advised people in the area to be on the look out for any suspicious bags and asked the public to call police if they find anything unusual.
Police say they believe the partial torso belongs to a light-skinned woman and are encouraging people who have women in their lives whom they have not heard from for a while, to reach out to them.
Investigations are ongoing with police currently reviewing footage from surveillance cameras in the area.
They are also looking to speak to anyone who thinks they may have seen anything suspicious in the area around the time the remains were found
