Toronto police say that remains found in a bag behind a butcher’s shop in Riverdale on Tuesday morning are believed to be that of an adult female.
Police say they were first called to the scene in the area of Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street East around 11:20 a.m. for an unknown trouble call.
The remains were then found however it was not initially clear if they were human or animal in origin.
An investigation was subsequently launched and a forensic team was called in before it was announced on Tuesday evening that police were of the opinion that the body part is that of a light skinned female.
The age of the victim is not yet known however police says that they believe this is a recent death, noting that there are not a lot of signs of decomposition on the person.
They are also investigating how the remains came to end up behind the shop saying that they don’t believe they were there on Monday.
The area has been closed off as various police continue their investigation.
