The family of a mother and son found dead in their Richmond Hill home last week says that Karen Costa was trying to stop her son, Jeffrey from harming himself when she was killed.
52 year old Karen and 22 year old Jeffrey were found with as obvious signs of trauma at the home on Dunvegan Avenue in the the Yonge Street and Highway 7 area on the morning of April 7th.
In a statement issued through York Regional Police, Sam Costa says ”this unspeakable tragedy that occurred in our family home last week was the result of a loving and protective mother trying to save her son from harming himself. ”
Costa says that Jeffrey had been struggling with mental health issues.
Costa adds that the mother and son shared ”a strong and undeniable bond” and that they were at the core of a very loving family.
He also says that the family have been involved in fundraising for mental health over the last 20 years, though they never thought their ”lives would be so directly affected and altered by this illness” calling the void of their sudden loss ‘unexplainable.’
The family extended their thanks to York Regional Police, Western University, ”and the other agencies for their professional and respectful handling of our family tragedy.”
Police described the discovery as a domestic incident and say that they are not looking for anyone else in connection with their investigation.
