Marie Henein, Jian Ghomeshi’s lawyer, has been facing criticism after the not guilty verdict that was announced last week.
Last night, she appeared on CBC’s The National to fire back at critics, explaining that she does not believe she betrayed women. Peter Mansbridge read out several social media posts that attacker her, like one that read “Brave Marie Henein, you’ve just set women’s rights and rights of assault victims back 70 years”. Henein explained to CBC that she faces backlash that no male lawyer would.
She said: “I know what my role is in the system, I know what my ethics are, I know who I am and I’m not about to send myself back into the kitchen because someone doesn’t like what I do”.
Did she betray women for taking on this case and doing a great job defending Ghomeshi? Or is she a role model for women who want to become lawyers?
