The NHL has officially announced that the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings will face-off in an outdoor regular-season game at BMO Field on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017.
The game is being called the first-ever NHL Centennial Classic. It’s part of a year long Centennial celebrations that will feature a variety of ceremonies and special events that will highlight 100 years of NHL hockey including anniversaries for teams like the Maple Leafs.
The game will be a rematch of the 2014 Winter Classic in Ann Arbour Michigan where 105,491 watched the Red Wings lose to the Maple Leafs 3-2 in a shootout.
Additional details surrounding the 2017 NHL Centennial Classic will be announced in the coming months.
