One Orillia man’s post has brought a lot of unexpected attention to Leamington and its tomatoes.
Brian Fernandez was shopping one day when he spotted the bottles of French’s KETCHUP, hidden among Heinz product.
He decided to research this mystery condiment before buying a bottle.
Fernandez discovered that Heinz pulled out of Leamington, killing 740 jobs and putting the local tomato industry in jeopardy.
“I didn’t even know there was a town called Leamington,” he said.
So, Fernandez bought some of the new product, and his family did a blind taste to determine if they liked French’s offering. They used both fingers and french fries before coming to their conclusion.
“We bought a bottle. Absolutely love it!!” he wrote in his post. “Bye. Bye. Heinz.”
His post has gone viral.
The 49-year-old construction worker said he never planned for his post to go viral.
Fernandez claims that when he went into an Orillia grocery store following his post going viral, he noticed that every bottle of French’s was sold out.
Leamington’s mayor, John Paterson, has weighed in on the controversy.
