Last year, the Conservatives put out a legislation allowing the government to revoke the citizenship of Canadians with dual citizenship who have been convicted of treason, terrorism, or spying. The Liberals have now scrapped that legislation and will allow these Canadians to keep their citizenship. That means the Toronto 18 group ringleader Zakaria Amara, who attempted to bomb downtown Toronto, will no longer have his citizenship revoked.
Back in the federal leaders debate on foreign policy, now-prime minister Trudeau told then-prime minister Harper that terrorists shouldn’t get their citizenship revoked because “A Canadian is a Canadian is a Canadian”.
Have the liberals changed the policy for better or worse? Have they betrayed the sanctity of citizenship?
