Yesterday’s budget plans showed a significant change in the Ontario education system.
Most students from families with annual incomes of $50,000 will receive free tuition starting next year. They will receive grants large enough to cover all education costs, unless their program’s tuition is much higher in which case it will not be entirely covered.
The new Ontario Student Grant will combine loans and grant programs into one, and will cost the same amount as the current $1.3 billion set aside for aid.
Starting in 2017, students will also be able to get $2,500 more in loans.
Should education be based on academic outcomes or economic outcomes?
