The national Angus Reid poll shows that Canadians by a 70% majority do not support bringing in more than 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada. 42% believe that we should immediately stop taking in Syrian refugees. This is after the federal Immigration Minister John McCallum committed to bringing in between 35,000 – 50,000 into the country. 52% nationally support the 25,000 refugees number, while 44% oppose it. Only 31% of Canadians have confidence that the security screening of Syrian refugees is “adequate.”
In November, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne said “what we can’t give in to, I think, is allowing security to mask racism. That’s the danger and that somehow talking about security allows us to tap into that racist vein, when that isn’t who we are.”
The Premier of Ontario is saying that if you express security concerns about Syrian refugees entering Canada, that allows you to “tap into that racist vein”. What gives a politician the right to accuse constituents, accuse Canadians of being racists? They come to you for a job and when they get the job they feel empowered to label constituents racists. Are you racist or is Kathleen Wynne out of line?
