A two day city council meeting gets underway on Wednesday morning with the 2016 operating budget to be discussed, and the ever expanding police budget set to be the hot topic.
It’s expected that a motion will be brought forward by Councillor Michael Thompson on Wednesday morning, looking to see millions of dollars skimmed from the police budget.
The police operating budget is set to increase by 2.4% this year or $24 million, and if approved would see the budget top $1 billion for the first time ever, with most of the increase needed to cover salary increases approved by Mayor John Tory.
This increase comes in spite of the fact that many other city divisions have had to make cuts.
In advance of today’s meeting, Police Chief Mark Saunders took time on Tuesday, to seek out Councillors at City Hall, and plead his case for the increase in funding, telling them that the hike was necessary to combat crime in the city, including a recent spike in shootings and stabbings.
