Rohit Khona was about to fulfill his childhood dream of attending the NBA All-Star weekend after getting a too-good-to-be-true deal on Kijiji, getting tickets for $2000 instead of $3000. Little did he know, the person he purchased it from was using a stolen identity. Once he paid, he didn’t hear from the seller and now the money can’t be retrieved because the transfer cannot be tracked down for privacy reasons. He’s out a staggering $2000 and doesn’t have tickets, but would like to warn others.
There have been several other victims of the scam and some will unfortunately find out if they were victims as well when try to enter the game on Sunday.
Some tips to protect yourself from ticket sale scams:
- Don’t e-transfer or wire money
- Be aware that electronic tickets can be easily reproduced
- Take a photo of the ticket seller just in case
- Meet the seller at the venue to check the tickets
