Mark Sutcliffe, a radio host from Ottawa, thinks we should be sending Members of Parliament home early, giving them a better work/life balance. Sutcliffe explains that “If we, the Canadian public, are the employers of our Members of Parliament, then we are largely unsympathetic bosses”.
He believes that they should get off work earlier in the week to spend time with family, finishing on Thursday night. For most MPs, they see family only on weekends. Divorce rates among MPs is double that the national average. It supposedly possesses the perfect ingredients to break up a marriage.
That said, should they get this extra time with no affect on their salaries? On the other hand, don’t they know what they were getting into when they put their name on the ballot? Do the MPs deserve to go off work on Thursday night?
