Should parents who lose a child be entitled to time off from work?
Vince Leitao, who lost his 16-year-old son Jonathan to cancer in 2014, is fighting to create Jonathan’s Law. It would amend Ontario’s Employment Standards Act to provide one year off for parents after they lose a child.
“The death of one’s child is a very painful, frightening and lonely journey resulting in severe trauma, confusion, disillusion and grief in a parent,” Leitao told the Toronto Sun here.
Jonathan was diagnosed with liver cancer in early 2014 and passed away in Septemberof that year at the Hospital for Sick Children.
Vince wrote a book called “Jonathan, do you know me?” to help with his grief. It was published in December, with proceeds from each book going towards the hospital that helped his son in the final months of his life.
