At least 50 Ontario police officers are currently suspended from duty for alleged misconduct with pay.
In Toronto that number jumped to 14 yesterday with the suspension of 4 Toronto Police officers and their alleged involvement with tampering.
Current list of suspended officers across the province:
29 Ontario Provincial Police officers
6 Ottawa Police officers
1 Windsor Police officer
14 Toronto Police officers
On average, Ontario police officers earn $90K per year which translates into approximately $4.5 million in pay towards suspended officers in 2016.
Ontario’s Police Services Act stipulates that officers can only be suspended without pay after they are sentenced to a term of imprisonment – Ontario is the only province with such a rule.
Is the union simply protecting it’s members or is it going too far?
