Mike Downey is getting down and dirty when it comes to fighting for his pigs!
Downey is used to fighting, he is a trained MMA fighter but while on the road competing he dreamed of having a pet – he thought about getting a dogs but after a little research he uncovered pigs are actually smarter than dogs and that is when he decided to get Vishnu and Athena his 2 pot-bellied pigs.
What Downey didn’t expect was his little pigs would grow to 100 pounds each and cause a whole lot of controversy in the city of Victoria, B.C.. One day animal control spotted Downey taking his pigs for a walk and the city told Downey he had 3 1/2 weeks to relocate them because bylaws state people cannot keep farm animals in the city.
Downey says he will do whatever it takes to stay with his pigs and not at on a farm 30 minutes away. He has gone as far as spend $7,000 to renovate his home building a piggy urinal, gates, walls, a sleeping area, a tunnel along the side of the house, and putting in hardwood floors. Downey says everybody loved his pigs during the three years they lived in his house.
For 3 years, Vishnu and Athena slept inside with blankets and a heater to keep them warm. Now, they sleep outside and Downey worries that winter will be too cold for them. He says their second favourite thing after food, is cuddling.
Downey is working with Animal Justice in Victoria to change the bylaw that prohibits people from keeping farm animals in the city and the pigs might actually be coming home soon!
