York Regional Police are warning the public about con artists posing as cops. On Tuesday a victim received a phone call from scammers claiming to be with the Canadian Revenue Agency and told her that she owed $58,000 in overdue taxes. The victim thought the call was suspicious and hung up. The victim got another call shortly after that showed up as York Regional Police on caller ID, and was told that she was going to be arrested if she didn’t pay the overdue taxes immediately. She hung up again, but a shortly after a black SUV showed up at her home. Two people got out of the SUV and knocked on her door. She hid inside her home until they left, then she called the police. The police have seen reports of tax collection scams over the phone by people claiming to be with the CRA, but this is the first report of the scammers showing up at someone’s residence. Have you ever received a call from scammers claiming to be from the CRA or police?
