The man accused of harassing two women via social media was found not guilty today in a Toronto court.
When the verdict was read members of the court were shocked and gasped as Ontario Court Justice Brent Knazan announced the verdict in the case against Gregory Alan Elliot.
Possibly a first of its kind trial raised questions about what constitutes criminal behaviour online and where the law should intervene.
Stephanie Guthrie and Heather Reilly testified Elliott became obsessed with their Twitter feeds in 2012 and incessantly tweeted at them, prompting them both to block him. They testified Elliott continued to tweet about them even after he was blocked using specific hashtags.
None of the tweets contained threats to harm either woman, the trial heard, though they were frequently insulting or hostile.
Should twitter be a safe place or is it fair game?
