A man has been found not guilty in what’s believed to be the first criminal harassment case in Canada involving Twitter.
Gregory Alan Elliott was accused of criminally harassing two women’s rights activists on Twitter in 2012.
Stephanie Guthrie and Heather Reilly testified that they were harassed over several months and say they believed Elliot kept tabs on them and their whereabouts through social media, even after they blocked his account.
Elliott’s lawyer called the Twitter interactions nothing more than “an ugly political debate” saying Eliott never threatened or made sexual comments at the women.
The courtroom in Toronto was packed with interested people with some even sitting on the floor.
