Canada’s Republican Now group wants the Royal Canadian Mint and Canada Post to stop putting British royalty on coins and stamps, and to feature and honour important Canadians instead.
One of the two new stamps issued this year features a headshot of Queen Elizabeth II. Republic Now says that John A. Macdonald would have been a more appropriate choice. The Queen has appeared in a total of 76 stamps, whereas Macdonald has only appeared on four.
Wayne Adam of Republic Now believes that “When portraits are chosen for everyday Canadian stamps, those of historic Canadians should be used”.
