The world was overcome with Powerball mania as $1.5 Billion U.S. was the jackpot for Wednesday’s draw. Three people were the lucky winners but unfortunately a montreal man was not so lucky. Joel Ifergan bought a ticket for the Lotto Max on a Friday evening in 2012. The jackpot was $27 million and Ifergan bought his ticket inside the 9pm deadline for that night’s draw. Lotto Quebec’s computers take 10 seconds to process a ticket and regardless of the ‘fact’ Ifergan bought and paid for his ticket seconds before 9pm, the ticket was issued seconds after 9pm, for the next draw date. The numbers were the winners for that Friday night, but Lotto Quebec refused to pay, even though they acknowledge Ifergan bought his ticket before the 9pm cutoff deadline for that Friday draw. Two Quebec courts sided with Lotto Quebec and the Supreme Court of Canada refused to hear his case. Ifergan has spent $100,000 in legal fees.
Do you think Joel Ifergan got screwed out of winning his millions? How would you feel if this was you? Would you fight it?
