On Monday, Taxi companies and drivers made known their displeasure with City council in regards to licensing fees being hiked on January 1st.
A day later, Mayor John Tory began some backtracking.
In a letter to Budget Chair Gary Crawford on Tuesday, Tory requested that City Council keep the fees at 2015 levels, essentially nixing the 2.5 % increase.
The Mayor offering in his words “modest” relief to cab drivers and owners in light of business being drawn away by thousands of unregulated UberX drivers.
Originally, the January 1st hike would have seen owner/operator’s licensing fees increase from about $780 a year to $800, while the renewal fee for a taxi driver who doesn’t own a cab, jump from $329 to $337.
Tory acknowledged the taxi industry was in a unique and challenging position for two reasons, competition through technology, and the reassessment of current regulations.
