Taxi drivers already feeling the pinch with potential business being suck away by thousands of unregulated UberX drivers, got what they believe was another slap in the face from the city.
Taxi’s renewing their licences with the city, are looking at a 2.5 per cent fee hike on Jan. 1.
One Toronto taxi company Beck Taxi is protesting the annual renewal fee increase for cabbies, believing it adds insult to injury.
They claim UberX drivers contribute nothing by way of fees, and Beck asked the city in November for a moratorium on licensing fees in good faith.
UberX uses a for-pay ride share scheme and trips cost less than the same journey in an ordinary taxi.
Uber was given a request to cease operations by the City of Toronto until a review is completed.
Owner/operator’s licensing fees will increase from about $780 a year to $800, while the renewal fee for a taxi driver who doesn’t own a cab, jumps from $329 to $337
The City Of Toronto get about $10 million annually in licensing fees.
