“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has reached one-billion dollars at the box office. Disney says “The Force Awakens” crossed the mark over the holiday weekend accomplishing the feat in just 12 days. The flick picking up another $153.5 million this weekend.
The previous record for reaching the $1 billion mark was “Jurrasic World’ doing it in 13 days during the summer of 2015.
The three-day holiday weekend is turning out to be a big one and will likely beat the $270 million record generated in 2009. That weekend saw blockbusters like “Sherlock Holmes” with Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law as well as “Avatar,” in it’s second week.
The other top moneymakers, this weekend, include “The Other Guys” with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, #2 with a healthy $39 million.
“Joy”,with Jennifer Lawrence, earned around $17.5 million and the re-imagining of “Point Break” a disappointment, only about 10 million in it’s first weekend.
