Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders said eight UberX drivers are currently facing Highway Traffic Act (39.1) charges, and he will wait to see how the courts deal with those cases before committing to enforcing the law, which he described as complicated. “I’m handcuffed,” Saunders said. “I don’t control the judicial system. We have to respond according to the law. Until the law is properly interpreted there’s not much we can do.” Saunders said until the courts clarify the law, there’s little point in arresting UberX drivers.
