Time Magazine has name German Chancellor Angela Merkel as the 2015 Person of the Year.
Merkel managed Greece’s economic crisis this past summer and spearheaded during the new wave of terrorism in Europe as well this fall’s rush of refugees. Germany will be taking in up to 1 million refugees by the end of 2015, an enormous amount compared to other countries like France, who will be taking in 30,000 in the next two years.
Time editor-in-Chief Nancy Gibbs explained that “in a year where world leaders were tested, no one was tested the way she was […] She has stepped up in a way that was uncharacteristic”. Gibbs went on to say that “Merkel brandished a different set of values — humanity, generosity, tolerance — to demonstrate how Germany’s great strength could be used to save, rather than destroy”.
Would you have expected to see Merkel as Person of the Year? If not, who would have nominated?
