Nova Scotia isn’t playing around. The maritime province passed a bill last week that boosted the fine on jaywalking from $410 to $697.50.
That’s a $700 hit for stepping out into the road at an inopportune time. The penalty is higher than the one attached to the use of a cellphone while behind the wheel.
Here in Ontario, it’s only a $50 fine!
The province says this higher fine sends the message to pedestrians that road safety is a shared responsibility.
The Ecology Action Centre in Halifax says the fine is disproportionate and counterproductive.
AM640 Host Mike Stafford admitted that he “spares the lives” of at least 3 pedestrians a day who decide to put themselves into the path of his moving vehicle when they don’t have the right of way.
Is $700 an absurd financial hit for WALKING? Will this new $700 fine put an end to pedestrians who put themselves in harm’s way? How many pedestrians have you “spared”?
