Monday morning, Ontario Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca announced that HOT Lanes (High-occupancy toll) are coming to the QEW and Highway 427.
QEW: 16.5 km stretch between Trafalgar Road and the Guelph Line.
Highway 427: The extension from Highway 409 north when it opens in 2021.
It’s been approached as a pilot project, Del Duca was “delighted” to announce at his 9:30am press conference.
Critics say that these toll lanes are being created on highways that taxpayers have already paid for, and that only wealthy residents will be able to take advantage of this opportunity.
Del Duca stressed that the HOT lanes will be free for cars containing two or more people, and for vehicles with “green” licence plates.
How much will this cost you? What other stretches of highway will feature HOT lanes? Del Duca offered no answers to these questions. He said he would reveal the cost to users come spring in 2016.
