Soon-to-be-Canadian Dror Bar-Natan is planning on recanting the mandatory Oath of Allegiance to Queen Elizabeth II right after he officially becomes a citizen. He finds the pledge “repulsive”, “silly”, “ridiculous” and “offensive” and claims that it’s equivalent to a “hazing” ritual. He added that he believes the Queen is a symbol of old-fashioned privilege.
The ceremony is today. Prior to this, Bar-Natan wrote a letter to the citizenship court explaining his opposition to the Oath which requires new citizens to be “faithful and bear true allegiance to Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, her heirs and successors.” In the letter, he announced his plan to recant.
Bar-Natan is a long-time permanent resident from Israel. He has been in Canada for 13 years now and is a math teacher.
Do you have a problem with the Oath? Should a new citizen be allowed to keep their citizenship if they immediately recant the Oath?
