Toronto Police are warning the public about the sale of clay oven stoves with counterfeit CSA safety certificates.
Police say the owner of the ovens has sold over 300 ovens to restaurants, catering businesses and homes across the GTA and Canada.
Police say the man would purchase the ovens from India and assemble and sell them with counterfeit safety certificates.
A number of the ovens were installed by unqualified gas fitters and they have the potential to cause fires or explosions that could lead to serious injuries or death.
Police say they’ve recovered around 3 full size ovens and 15-20 of the smaller burner units from Kitchen Queen stores on Danforth, Gerrard and Markham Rd in Scarborough.
The electrical safety authority is conducting an investigation under the electrical safety act, the TSSA is conducting an investigation under the technical standards & Safety act and the CSA is assisting in all the investigations.
The owner of the Kitchen Queen appliance store, 57 year old Gautham Mashetty, has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime and passing off wares.
He’ll make a court appearance in January.
There are still about 200 of the ovens that are unaccounted for and police are asking anyone who purchased one of these ovens to contact them.
