While Ontario has a law preventing pit bulls from being bred in the province, the New York Police Department is taking a different approach to the controversial dog breed.
The NYPD has a new recruit in its K-9 division: Kiah, the pit bull. Kiah is the latest addition to NYPD’s Poughkeepsie Police Department, which helps to search for drugs and missing persons. Typically, German shepherds and Belgian Malinois are most commonly employed to be in the K-9 department, while beagles, collies, retrievers and bloodhounds are also used. Unfortunately for Kiah, pit bulls usually carry the stereotype as being fit for the company of criminals.
To be expected, the NYPD is facing backlash for using such an intimidating, savage-beast of an animal. Pit bull advocates are applauding the NYPD for their use of the canine breed, and for the NYPD’s plan to use Kiah as an advocate for other pit bulls.
