Toronto Zoo announced that one of two polar bear cubs born earlier this month has died.
The pair were born to one of zoo’s two adult female polar bears, Aurora, on Remembrance day.
Despite showing good maternal instincts, 15 year old, 800 pound Aurora did not appear to be producing milk to feed the newborns.
The surviving cub is in intensive care being fed a special milk formula by staff and is being monitored very closely.
When pregnant, female Polar bears can weigh as much as 1,100 lbs., while their newborns can weigh as little as 1 lbs.
