Freelance journalist Shenz Kermalli wrote HERE in the Globe & Mail about an experience that her sister Fatema had in a Mississauga Loblaws.
Fatema claims she startled a woman in the produce section, who responded by saying “Oh my God, I’m sorry. Please don’t blow me up.”
When she was waiting in the checkout line, she realized that nobody was waiting in line behind her, while every other line was five to six people deep. Everybody in the store was staring at her.
Karmalli writes “This was a minor incident with no real ramifications. Nor is racism something we, all Canadian visible ethnic minorities, haven’t experienced at some point in our lives. But in Mississauga? If this kind mentality exists in Mississauga, how much worse will it be for those living in Parry Sound or Winnipeg?”
Are you buying her sister’s story? Are you seeing this anti-Muslim backlash in your community?
