Peterborough Police and the Ontario Fire Marshall believe that a late-night blaze at Peterborough’s only mosque on Saturday was an act of arson, deliberately set by somebody.
A neighbour of the Masjid Al-Salaam mosque called the fire department around 11 p.m. Saturday.
Nobody was injured in the fire that was confined to the building’s main floor. Damage is estimated at around $80,000
Kenzu Abdella, the president of the Kawartha Muslim Religious Association, said that the police are treating this as a hate crime, and that 70 members were in the mosque celebrating the birth a baby just minutes before the fire started.
Peterborough’s St. John’s Anglican Church is collecting funds for MKRA to help pay for the damages.
A fundraising page has also been launched HERE, and has already reached $50,000 at time of this report’s posting.
