A new petition has come forth urging Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to stop the Syrian refugee resettlement in Canada, and has already received widespread approval from over 27,000 signatures.
The petition, posted on Care2 Petitions, was started to combat the recent claim by the Canadian PM to resettle 25,000 refugees by January 1st, 2016. This report has caused some backlash, as many are calling the goal to be beyond the reach of a manageable resettlement program, as well as the potential threat of ISIS members disguising themselves as refugees.
The petition states, “It is unrealistic to do the proper refugee’s screening in such a short period of time. While the screening process generally takes 3 years and longer ,you made the promise to finish the “refugee business” in two months!”. The petition also references the recent attacks in Paris as a reason why the government cannot be too hasty in its screening process.
While the petition doesn’t offer up an alternative to the plan in place, the petition does refer to the “impoverished seniors…disadvantaged unemployed, and families…” as some of the other ways that our resources may be used.
Do you think that Canada should stop its resettlement program, or should we adjust the total of refugees that are allowed in?
