An arrest has been made in a homicide investigation dating back twenty-five years.
Early in the morning of Monday November 19, 1990, a man, identified as Surinder Singh Parmar, was found stabbed to death in the men’s washroom of a building on the Penny Gas Bar lot, located at 1039 Danforth Road.
Toronto police have arrested 61 year old Rupert Richards of Toronto. He was 36 at the time of the murder.
Police say he was unemployed and was arrested outside his home.
He now faces charges of first degree murder.
Police say forensic evidence including DNA testing and fingerprinting have led to the arrest after 25 years.
They believe the motive was likely robbery but only a small amount of cash was stolen.
Parmar was in Canada on a visitors permit and had left his wife and two children in India.
They came to Canada for his funeral and decided to settle in Ontario afterwards.
The family is extremely grateful to police for their hard work but has asked for privacy from the media.
