Immediately following the Flint Firebirds’ overtime win over the Oshawa Generals yesterday, head coach John Gruden was fired. The firing apparently stemmed from team owner Rolf Nilsen’s displeasure regarding the amount of ice time his son, a rookie defenceman, had been receiving. But that is not the weirdest part of the story, upon learning of their coach being let go, all twenty players quit the team. Apparently so ticked at the decision to can the coach, they decided they are not playing any more.
Are hockey players right to quit? Does the owner have the right to hire and fire whoever he pleases?
