Justin Trudeau has been Prime Minister for only a day or so, but he’s already making changes!
Thursday saw the Liberals stay true to a campaign promise when they announced that the long-form census will be reinstated. It was axed by the previous Conservative government, replaced by a voluntary household survey in 2010.
Family Minister Jean-Yves Duclos says the MANDATORY long census will be brought back in 2016.
The Liberals didn’t explain what would happen to Canadians who fail to fill out the census.
The Statistics Act specifies that a $500 fine or a maximum 3-month stay in prison will be applied to somebody who refuse to complete the long-form census if it arrives in their mailbox.
Do you think the long-form census is necessary? Does the government need to know the details of your life? Should you have the right not to fill out one of these forms if you don’t feel like doing so?
