If you’re an outside contractor doing work in a Peel public school, should you be vetted beforehand by the police?
How do we know you’re not a pedophile or criminal?
That’s what the union representing school board maintenance workers is asking after they learned that contractors aren’t required to submit to a thorough criminal record check (CRC).
All school board employees, which include in-house maintenance workers, must submit to one. CUPE Local 2544 president Dan Bouchard wants that fact to change, as it’s a double standard.
“To a parent, this is about student safety,” Bouchard said. “We believe students should be protected at all the times.”
Peel District School Board’s Brian Woodland said this isn’t an issue, as contractors without a background check are supervised during their time in the school.
Do you think CUPE is right, that it’s only fair that contractors follow the same rules that all other school staff must adhere to? What’s the point of a criminal record check if it checks out clean on a pedophile who hasn’t been caught committing any crimes yet?
