City Council has voted in favour of banning the use of hookahs at licensed establishments.
The council voted 34-3 in favour with Denzil Minnan-Wong, Jim Karygiannis and Giorgio Mammoliti the three who voted against it.
The vote comes in the wake of concerns raised by Toronto’s medical officer of health Dr. David McKeown about the effects of hookahs on users and those exposed to second-hand smoke.
He also raised concerns about how the use of hookahs could be seen to normalise smoking among young people.
The ban will come into effect on on April 1st 2016.
There are an estimated 60 to 80 hookah lounges currently in operation in the city.
