The oldest and largest red oak tree in the city is in the back yard of 76 Coral Gable Drive in Emery Village. The tree has been there between 250 – 350 years and a motion has been brought forward to keep it there.
The property went up for sale earlier this year and community members became worried that a potential new or future owner of the property may not act as a proper custodian of the tree. The red oak is protected by the current law, according to a report by the director of the city’s director of urban forestry. Since it is listed as a “heritage tree,” the report says, any application to remove or injure it will be automatically rejected, and any appeal would come to city council.
Should the city buy the house to save the red oak tree?
