News broke Thursday morning that Toronto Blue Jays General Manager Alex Anthopoulos will not be extending his contract with the team. Sources have confirmed the news with both the Toronto Star and Sportsnet.
The 38-year-old just completed his sixth and best season with the Jays, helping to bring the team to the playoffs for the first time in 22 years.
The aforementioned sources have indicated the reason behind this decision is linked to incoming team president Mark Shapiro, who isn’t a fan of some of Anthopoulos’ past decisions.
Anthopoulos recently indicated that there’s no issue with his salary. Again, sources suggest he didn’t want to work with Shapiro, who allegedly will be given final say on all player moves with the team.
At a press conference in early October, Anthopoulos told reporters that he’s happy in Toronto and loves the city. He declared that his house is paid for and he doesn’t need to lease a car anymore.
