After the recent talks of the Calgary International Airport potentially changing its name to the Stephen J. Harper International Airport, people are already talking about naming something after the former-Prime Minister here in Toronto.
With two petitions in Calgary leading the debate, two opposing opinions have begun to discuss the idea of renaming the Calgary International Airport after Stephen Harper. While those for the renaming of the airport are 20,000 signatures, and counting, strong, the petition against the idea is totaling around 19,00o names, respectively. It is still up for debate as to whether they will rename it after the long-serving PM.
It is not unusual for buildings and monuments to be named after politicians. Toronto Pearson International Airport, named after Lester B. Pearson, was named for the PM who served half as long as Stephen Harper, but it does not mean that the name is limited to airports. Pierre Elliott Trudeau, for example, has 3 schools named for him in the GTA (Pierre Elliott Trudeau High School in Markham, a Pierre Elliott Trudeau Public School in Oshawa and an Ecole Elementaire Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau in Little Italy). Is it so odd that some would want to name something after the sixth longest serving Prime Minister in history, Stephen Harper?
Do you think Toronto should name something after Stephen Harper? What building/institution would you rename after Stephen Harper?
