Richland County authorities have just announced that the school resource officer who was caught on camera violently flipping a black female South Carolina high school student at her desk has been fired. According to Sheriff Leon Lott, Deputy Ben Fields violated agency policy when he picked up girl and threw her across a classroom as he attempted to make an arrest. The girl was on her cell phone and refused to leave the classroom when the teacher asked her to leave, Fields was then called in to remove her. Fields was initially suspended without pay when a video of the arrest went viral. He was known as “Officer Slam” to most of the students as he had a reputation for using force.
Should the officer face charges or was losing his job enough punishment? Should the teenager be off the hook?
