Wilfrid Laurier University are reconsidering a plan to place twenty-two statues of Canadian prime ministers on campus after strong opposition from community members. Jonathan Finn, the chair of the department of communication studies began a petition opposing the project saying that the art project is insensitive to First Nations groups. The university’s Senate passed a motion Dr. Finn had introduced asking the school’s board of governors to cancel the plan. Other groups on campus have made statements opposing the project. This weekend, the university administration will talk to the leaders of the community group to see if there is room for compromise.
Should the statues be put up? Do you think they are offensive to oppressed groups?
