There’s a growing trend being pushed by anti-vaxxers, and it’s harming Man’s Best Friend!
Calgary veterinarian Dr. Katie Van Sluys is troubled by the increasing number of dog owners who are refusing to vaccinate their pets against the highly contagious parvovirus, which is spread by direct contact with an infected dog or by the fecal-oral route.
Symptoms are vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and all the worst things imaginable.
Dr. Van Sluys says she’s seeing more patients ignoring vaccines because they’re afraid of what the side effects may be. These anti-vaxxers rely on herd immunity to protect their pet, meaning that as long as a large percentage of the dog population is vaccinated, their dog should be safe.
Dr. Danny Joffe says that vaccines are biological, and they can case side effects just like they do in people. But in most cases, the benefits of vaccinating far outweigh any risks.
Not only that, if you decide not to vaccinate, and your dog encounters a health-related issue like parvovirus, it can cost you thousands of dollars to rehabilitate them!
Would you ever consider not getting your dog or cat vaccinated? Are you an anti-vaxxer or just trying to save on pet costs?
