A church in Italy is looking to the lottery for some much needed cash.
Not content with parishioners’ meager donations, the church of San Martino in Cigola has posted a note on their door asking members to ignore the sins of gambling and place a lottery ticket (preferably a winning one) in the offering plate.
“We all know we need help,” read the flyer. “So with a smile and without making givers uncomfortable or inviting the moralizing of theologians, we’re willing to give this a shot.”
The church needs a new roof.
The church’s leader, Father Abramo, said “we’re not looking for publicity,” he told a journalist from Corriere. “This is an initiative we want to keep local.”
Italy is host to 1/3 of the world’s gaming machines, and Italians lost 17 billion Euros to bookmakers last year.
