Entertainment Weekly has released it’s 10 most influential pop culture moments since 1990, including the HUGE shift we’ve seen in movies, TV, books and every other piece of pop culture we consume. Topping the list was when Ellen DeGeneres’ “Ellen” character announced she was gay over a loudspeaker in 1997. She became the first prime time sitcom to feature a gay leading character. The episode attracted some 42-million viewers and would later win two Emmy Awards, paving the way for other LGTB-influenced programs like Modern Family, The L Word & Will and Grace.
