The latest public opinion by Ekos shows that health is top priority to voters in Canada for the upcoming federal election, but has failed to reflect in the attention given by party leaders.
In the study, one of the questions asked participants to think how they would react if they were prime minister for the day, and had $1 billion to spend over the next 10 years. Health issues were among the top 10 issues, with 5 of the health related concerns being placed in the top 10. Why does it seem to not be reaching the ears of our political parties?
“Simply put, the stuff that politicians talk about during an election is exactly the opposite of what Canadians prioritize for themselves,” said Amir Attaran, a professor with the faculty of medicine and the faculty of law at the University of Ottawa. “Our poll results clearly show that any politician brave enough to campaign on health right now would be campaigning on clearly the most important issue to Canadians. Lamentably, none of the political parties have done this.”
With only 10 days left in the election campaign, voters’ concerns around important issues may have to wait until after the election has taken place.
Do you think that Healthcare should be a #1 issue for party leaders?
